How to Make Taco Spice Mix

If you enjoy homemade tacos, then making your own taco spice mix will add fab flavours to your tacos. This version is particularly herby and excellent for cheese and vegetable fillings.

Ingredients: (makes 12 tbsp)

3 tbsp cumin seeds
3 tbsp chili powder
2 tbsp paprika
2 tbsp oregano (I used Mexican)
2 tbsp dried thyme
1 tbsp basil
3 tsp onion flakes
3 tsp garlic flakes
2 tsp sea salt

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Grind the salt, cumin and garlic and onion flakes

  • Add to a bowl

  • Stir in the chili and paprika powders

  • Crumble in the dried herbs and combine thoroughly

    Store in an airtight jar out of direct sunlight. Use within 3 months.

    How to Toast and Grind

    A few people have asked how I toast and grind whole spices. It's really very easy...

  • Over a medium heat add your spices to a dry pan

  • Whilst stirring or shaking the pan; toast for a few minutes

  • When they start to darken and you can really smell their aromas, they're ready

  • Remove from the heat and let cool before grinding
