How to Make Hamburger Seasoning

If you make homemade burgers and sausages, then a homemade hamburger seasoning is just the thing. And this tasty blend of herbs and spices will add fab flavours and mouthwatering aromas and can be made in just minutes!

Ingredients: (makes about 5-6 tbsp)

3 tbsp fennel seeds
2 tbsp black peppercorns
2 tbsp dried rosemary
2 tbsp dried sage
4 tsp cumin seeds
2-3 tsp chili powder (hot or mild)
2 tsp sumac (optional)
2 tsp sea salt
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp garlic powder

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Grind the fennel, sage, rosemary, salt, cumin and peppercorns

  • Add to a bowl

  • Mix in the chili, onion, garlic powder and, if using, the sumac

    That's it

    Store in an airtight container out of direct sunlight and use within 3 months.

    Click here to see it on my site.

    Note: Dry toasting the whole spices before grinding is worth doing for even more flavours and aromas. See below for info on this.

    How to Toast and Grind

    A few people have asked how I toast and grind whole spices. It's really very easy...

  • Over a medium heat add your spices to a dry pan

  • Whilst stirring or shaking the pan; toast for a few minutes

  • When they start to darken and you can really smell their aromas, they're ready

  • Remove from the heat and let cool before grinding
