BBQ Spice Rub Recipe

If you want to add authentic flavours and aromas to your grilling, then a homemade BBQ Rub is recommended. This one is fairly basic and a good choice if you've never made one before.

Note: If you only have ground spices just use those, but reduce the amount you use by half. So instead of 2 tablespoons of peppercorns, you use 1 tablespoon pre-ground pepper etc.

Ingredients: (makes 1 cup of barbecue rub)

6 tbsp brown sugar
3 tbsp cumin seeds
2 tbsp black peppercorns
2 tbsp dried oregano
1 tbsp allspice berries
1 tbsp mustard seeds
3 inch piece of cinnamon
1 tbsp sea salt

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Break up the cinnamon stick
  • In your grinder, coarsely grind the cinnamon with the spices, sugar and salt
  • Crumble in the oregano and mix well

    Store in an airtight jar out sunlight and use within 3-6 months.
