How to Make Garam Masala

To enjoy the unique flavours and aromas of Indian food at home, this easy-to-make Garam Masala is just the thing. Using a blend of traditional spices, it takes just minutes to make!

Ingredients: (makes about 5-6 tbsp)

3 tbsp coriander seeds (cilantro)
2 tbsp green cardamom pods
2 tbsp black peppercorns
4 tsp chili powder
4 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp fennel seeds
2 tsp cloves
1 x 3 inch piece of cinnamon

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

  • Break up the cinnamon

  • Grind the cinnamon along with the cardamom pods, peppercorns, cumin, coriander, cloves and fennel seeds

  • Sieve into a bowl

  • Stir in the chili

    That's all there is to it!

    Store in an airtight container out of direct sunlight and use within 3 months.

    Note: Dry toasting the whole spices before grinding is worth doing for even more flavours and aromas. See below for info on this.

    How to Toast and Grind

    A few people have asked how I toast and grind whole spices. It's really very easy...

  • Over a medium heat add your spices to a dry pan

  • Whilst stirring or shaking the pan; toast for a few minutes

  • When they start to darken and you can really smell their aromas, they're ready

  • Remove from the heat and let cool before grinding
